The main objective is to promote, at the national level, the implementation of a comprehensive system for the collection, transport and recovery of discarded fishing gear, ensuring compliance with extended producer responsibility, traceability and the reincorporation of its components into the circular economy, with the aim of moving towards zero waste in the fishing sector.
The expected outcomes are national support for joining the management system for discarded fishing gear for its reintroduction into the circular economy; dissemination of the new regulations on the management of discarded fishing nets and gear and promotion of the creation of an extended responsibility management entity; the promotion of research, eco-design and development of discarded net and gear components for the production of new nets and gear through reuse; collection and treatment of 30 tonnes of discarded fishing nets and gear for return through the circular economy; disseminating the principles of the circular economy in the fishing sector, highlighting the tradition, knowledge and role of entities and professionals dedicated to fishing nets and gear, through awareness-raising and participation actions.
