CTAG publishes an article in the Vision Systems Design magazine

The Vision Systems Design magazine publishes the article “Triangulation-based 3D system measures axle diameters” written by Engineers of the Process Engineering Department at CTAG, Ángel Dacal-Nieto, Víctor Alonso and David Gómez: http://www.vision-systems.com/articles/print/volume-19/issue-9/features/triangulation-based-3d-system-measures-axle-diameters.html

This paper presents a machine vision system developed by CTAG, based on laser triangulation, which is used for an on-line measuring of the diameter of a cylindrical part. The system, which achieves a precision below 30μm, has been working for more than 5 years in an automotive supplier, monitoring 100% of the production. CTAG has developed the system, which joins machine vision, software development, robotics and automation of industrial processes.

New Anechoic Chamber with Multi-Axis Vibration

acustica_y_vibracionjpg

CTAG has developed a new facility for noise measurement and objective assessment under multi-axis vibration. The new facility consists of an Anechoic Chamber coupled to an MTS High Frequency Multi-Axis Simulation Table, which allows for 6DOF excitation of isolated components up to 500Hz. The operational noise of the electrohydraulic shaker is extremely low and the anechoic chamber avoids unwanted reflections and isolates the measurement area from external noise and vibration. Under such conditions, sound quality metrics can be computed from the measured signals in order to objectively evaluate the noise level of the components.

Although the main focus of the new facility is the acoustic measurement and objective rating of S&R of automotive components, three other applications have been considered in its design:

  • Full vehicle acoustic measurements: the size of the anechoic chamber means a whole vehicle can be brought in and tested for acoustic measurements such as operating noise of the vehicle components, acoustic isolation of the vehicle openings, car audio equipment analysis, etc.
  • Vibroacoustic analysis of structures: the anechoic chamber is equipped with an acoustically and vibrationally isolated casting plate. The component can be excited with a modal hammer or modal exciter while the response is measured through omnidirectional microphones. This allows for measuring the relationship between vibration input and acoustic output on automotive samples, and correlating the results with the modal behaviour of the structure.
  • Operating noise of components: the casting plate allows for mounting isolated components, such as the electric window system, radio operation, unloaded electric motors, etc., and analysing their operating noise.

As a result, a highly versatile facility is available to the automotive industry for objective vibroacoustic analysis and troubleshooting, using state-of-the-art multi-axis vibration and noise analysis equipment, with the consequent reduction in the development time.

Rear seat optimisation against whiplash

CTAG has developed a methodology for designing rear seats with safety improvements to prevent whiplash in rear seats.
A very common type of accident, especially on urban roads, is the low speed rear impact, which causes frequent cervical injuries to the occupants of the vehicle crashed into.

This effect is known as “whiplash” and it leads to high medical costs related to recovery and long term sick leaves. In recent years tests for the safety assessment of this injury have been introduced in organisms such as Euro NCAP, IIHS, etc. but none for assessing whiplash injuries in rear seats. The occupants of these seats are subject to the same acceleration in a rear impact crash and therefore to the same potential injuries. This research shows a methodology for designing rear seats with safety improvements to prevent whiplash in rear seats, using virtual simulation tools and specific tests following the methodology of CTAG-IDIADA.

Inauguration of CTAG’s new facilities for Electronics and ITS

On 19th February, 2014 CTAG inaugurated the new facilities of Electronics and Intelligent Transport Systems.

130 technologists work in these new facilities, which cover an area of more than 7,000 m2 including workshops, laboratories and development studios, and more than 15,000 m2 of tracks that reproduce different environments to test the new intelligent driving systems. System validation and innovation activities which meet current and future needs of the automotive sector are carried out at these facilities.

CTAG participates in many European R&D projects and provides advanced skills in ADAS systems and vehicle automation, connectivity, electromobility and interior comfort, HMI, hardware, software and validation of electronic systems.

In order to meet the goals, the new infrastructures have seven laboratories (ADAS, Connectivity, Electromagnetic Compatibility , Electromobility , Volume and Shape, HMI Technologies and Augmented Reality, and Hardware in the Loop), a Function and System Development area, areas for Electronic Design and Electronic Prototype Manufacturing, a Design and New Concepts studio, an advanced Driving Simulator, Intelligent Transport Systems test tracks, Research prototypes, and a Cooperative Communications C2X Siscoga Intelligent Corridor.

CTAG will attend JEC Composites Europe 2014 presenting CarbonInspired 2.0 network.

From 11 to 13 March th th 2014, the international show “JEC Composites Europe” will take place in Paris, where the network CarbonInspired 2.0, coordinated by CTAG, will have its own exclusive booth at the Spain pavilion. JEC is the most important worldwide show concerning composites and in its 2013 edition, it had more than 27,000 visitors, more than 70% coming from abroad. In the event, several issues about composites were discussed, being the most important ones those related to the automotive sector, as approximately 70% of the parts shown in the Exhibit Area were related to the transports sector.

On the last attendance to this fair, in 2012, the stand was visited by more than 50 companies and national and international agencies, interested in knowing the advantages of the transfer network, finding common points of interest and collaborating on new developments in the field of nanotechnology.

In its 2014 edition, CarbonInspired 2.0 will offer its members a limited number of free admission tickets for the fair, which will take place in the Paris Exhibition Centre-Porte de Versailles. To apply for the tickets, it is necessary to follow the next steps:
